back to the maps, route 4, route 5 and 301 checking out okay. >> thank you, angie. the waiting game is over. mike shanahan has agreed to be the head coach of the washington redskins. 9news disital correspondent alex trevino joins us with the latest. >> reporter: it's quiet at redskins park. there has been a lot of celebrating going on since the second that mike shanahan signed and agreed to be the head football coach. really the minute he landed here on the plane. the deal is that mike shanahan will be coach and vice president of football operations. inside sources say that he will have final say on all redskins football matters. reporter: just two days after jim zorn's for seen

departure, mike shanahan agreed to his salary he had with the denver broncos. the first two seasons the broncos will pay half that figure. the deal was reportedly signed at redskins park last night. he then posed for pictures with dan snyder. we spoke to several redskins players after the news broke last night. >> my agent texted me and told me mike shanahan will be the new head coach. i think it will be great. this will give us a chance to really compete having that experience and leadership in there. it will be unbelievable. >> great day in washington redskins history to have coach like coach shanahan. you don't get too many two-time winning coaches on your football team. >> reporter: confirmation that shanahan's son kyle will be the offensive coordinator will be announced. that is expected this afternoon.

in the news, last month's attempted terror attack led president obama to change some of his plans for prisoners at guantanamo in cuba. he still plans to close the prison but he will stop sending prisoners to yemen. police in arizona released video of a close call for a teenager who had his truck stolen. he left his running to listen to music when a man hopped in and drove off. the teen jumped into the truck's bed and held on for some miles until the driver forced him out at gunpoint. if you need more proof that cats have nine lives, an animal

makes her fabulous. but you can see she is clearly in the ad that pet take has out today. that is one story dominating a lot of web sites. another story takes us to outer space. nasa's hubble space telescope captured the earliest photo of our universe, 600 million years after the big bang. scientists revealed the image on tuesday. it shows very small galaxies, 13.2 billion years old that have become the great galaxies of today. this is about as far back in time as the hubble space telescope can go but nasa will have to rely on a new observatory that is in action. the $4.5 billion james web telescope that is set to launch in four years. >> thank you, kristen. two red skin stars take swipes at each other and his former coach speaks out. have seen her in babble, she is 29 today. as mike shanahan gets ready to make his debut, jim zorn is beginning his life after coaching the redskins. 9news met with zorn at his home in northern virginia. he seemed relaxed, unburdened and said despite his shoddy treatment by redskins brass he never considered walking away. >> i wasn't really frustrated to the point of exhaustion or quitting, anything like that at any moment. the problem is it has to transfer into wins and losses. >> two of the redskins biggest stars are engaged in a war of words. in his weekly radio appearance, clinton portis took swings at jason campbell. he said the quarterback isn't ready to be a team leader and has enough trouble getting plays into the huddle.

he has seen his political stock fall after his presidential bid and the financial meltdown. the dodd news broke hours after another democrat, north dakota senator announced he will not seek re-election. this means the democrats will have a fight on their hands to maintain the filibuster proof majority. a colorado governor bill ritter is expected to announce his decision not to seek a second term sometime today. president obama is demanding specific solutions to the security gap by the end of the week. he described what is called a tense meeting with top government security officials. he blasted the intelligent community about not connecting the dots on umar farouk
